Known as the Island of the Gods, Bali is a place many recognize the infamous sound “Om.” This word originates from religion – in Bali, specifically Balinese Hinduism. This blend of Hindu traditions with local animism and respect for ancestors and Buddhist Saints is referred to as “Agama Hindu Darhma.”

As a yogi myself, this powerful symbol intrigues me. “Om” is both cross-cultural and cross-religious. It is believed that the god Brahma meditated this word as he created the entire world. The word has three sounds: A, U, and M. These sounds represent “everything” – the A for the waking state, the U for the dream state, and the M for the deep-sleep state. The pause following the M then recognizes “infinite consciousness.”
All mantras and chants begin with “om” – making it the most important sound in Balinese Hinduism.

While this word is not to be taken lightly, many travelers from around the world use it often in yoga as well as in everyday life. While it is typically not used with the intention of misuse, the tattoos & clothing many Westerners sport can be viewed as an insult. Anything below the waist (including the legs and feet – a common spot people choose for their tattoos) is considered to be body parts that are “impure.” Placing such a sacred icon on these body areas is something to avoid. So, if you are looking to be “chic” or “fashion-forward” with this fancy looking symbol on your clothes or body – be sure to have an understanding of the deep meaning and history of this incredible icon. While splurging to get the symbol on a larger part of your body may seem out of budget – in the long run it will pay off to respect the culture!
Stay Boujee – but more importantly, stay on a budget!
